What is the Wigan Youth Zone?
Wigan Youth Zone is one of the town’s newest charities. It is a £6milllion youth centre, funded by 3 local businessmen – David Whelan, Martin Ainscough & Bill Ainscough. WYZ will be open 7 days a week, and will provide social, sporting & developmental activities for young people aged 8-21 at a cost of only 50p per visit. It is part of a network of other Youth Zones that have recently opened across the North West of England.
Originally the project started in Bolton as the Bolton Lads and Girls Club going onto grab success and subsequent Government backed funding for the charity OnSide who were running with this.
Following this success, the model was adopted across other communities throughout the North West including Oldham, Carlisle, Blackburn and Manchester, with Government backed ‘myplace’ funding.
Where do Lowri Beck come in?
Whilst the building has been under construction, the Youth Zone team has been in touch with local companies to generate ongoing support for the project. As a sign or our commitment to our local community, Lowri Beck is delighted to be a Founder Patron of this fantastic cause. We look forward to working closely with Wigan Youth Zone over the next few years, helping make the facility as good as it can possibly be for local young people.
